Fan Funded company making bold statements with their first project. Love to see this doing well. It's message is relevant, and executed to make for a creatively bold storytelling experience.
Highly original concept in which to explore some of the more common personal and inter-personal relationship issues. With a tiny budget, this film delivers pretty believable Kaiju monsters and a partially destroyed city, while at the same time keeping everything on a very personal level. The character arc for Hathaway is somewhat sterotypical, but it took something as big as a kaiju to snap her out of her self destructive mode. Sudeikis on the other hand has a much more interesting and complex character arc as he delves deeper into addiction and self destruction.
This movie was a great surprise! It comes off as a fun, quirky movie in the trailers, but it actually has several dark undertones. There's alcoholism, domestic violence, but eventually gives you this awesome feeling of female empowerment. What would you do if you could control a large monster in the other side of the world? There are also some homages to classic sci-fi movies that I loved! Go see!
Going into this film, the audience expects a quirky, comedic, indie spin on the monster movie genre. Suffice it to say that it achieves that goal in spades, and, without spoiling key plot points, transcends that premise to become a remarkable allegory for dark, uncomfortable themes, as experienced by the main character portrayed by Anne Hathaway. The viewer endures that winding journey alongside her and comes out feeling that same sense of empowerment.
A concoction of uneven, whimsical weirdness that makes you laugh and feel for the characters. More of a dark comedy than a monster movie and unlike anything you'd have seen. Benefits from a terrific Ann Hathaway and a very measured Jason Sudeikis.
